Book Rating System

Six-Point Rating System

The six-point rating system is the one I will use for the book reviews posted on this blog from January 2025 onwards. Each point represents an element of the novel for evaluation. After rating each element from 1 through 5, I will get the sum and divide it by six to get the average score as the total rating.

PLOT AND PACING
RATING: ★★★★★

This represents the plot development and pacing throughout the novel. I will be discussing here any plot twists and my thoughts about it. Plot holes will also be pointed out.

PROTAGONIST'S ARC
RATING: ★★★★★

This represents the evolution of the main character's goals, motivations, and character development from the beginning to the end of the novel.

CONFLICT ARC
RATING: ★★★★★

This is similar to the protagonist's arc. In some cases, it might be that the obstacle the character is facing would be their own self-limiting beliefs or a tricky situation. This doesn't necessarily point towards a character.

CONFLICT vs. MC
RATING: ★★★★★

Here I will evaluate whether the conflict and/or the antagonist is sufficient to challenge the protagonist throughout the story.

WRITING STYLE
RATING: ★★★★★

This is a personal preference. Personally, I prefer books written in beautiful prose that pays attention to minute details without being boring and sounding pretentious.

READING EXPERIENCE
RATING: ★★★★★

Brace yourselves! In this part of the review, I will be discussing my feelings. I will also include my journey in finding this book and other anecdotes I feel like sharing while reading this book.

Why did I decide to review my books this way?

When I was re-reading my Goodreads reviews from years ago, I realized there are parts of my reviews that I sadly can no longer understand because I don’t remember what the books were about. As a result, I decided to start fresh with my approach to book reviews. I made it my mission to do justice to the books I read from this point onward by giving them proper, thoughtful reviews.

This new endeavor also encourages me to slow down and carefully reflect on what I’m reading. This approach is also partially inspired by the rating system I’ve been using for the manga and manhwas I have read since 2018.

Who came up with this?

I do not claim to be the first person to ever think of this idea—someone else has probably thought of it before. However, all the points I’ve listed so far are entirely my own.
